HIV/AIDS in Louisiana
· As of March 31, 2009, a cumulative total of 28,843 persons have been diagnosed with HIV/AIDS in Louisiana, including 308 cases in children under the age of 13.
· There are persons living with HIV in every parish in Louisiana, and this number continues to increase each year, largely due to more effective drug therapies.
· A total of 16,418 persons were known to be living with HIV/AIDS in Louisiana, of which 8,756 (53%) had been diagnosed with AIDS as of March 31, 2009.
· In 2008, 1,154 new HIV cases were diagnosed in Louisiana; 34% of the cases were in Region 1 (New Orleans area) and 25% were in Region 2 (Baton Rouge area).
· In 2008, 856 new AIDS cases were diagnosed in Louisiana. Of these cases, 32% occurred in Region 1 (New Orleans) ad 28% occurred in Region 2 (Baton Rouge).
· In 2007, Louisiana ranked 5th highest in state AIDS case rates and 11th in the number of AIDS cases diagnosed in 2007, according to the CDC 2007 HIV/AIDS Surveillance Report (Vol. 19).
· New Orleans ranked 2nd for AIDS case rates among the largest metropolitan areas in the U.S. in 2007; Baton Rouge ranked 3rd.
· In Louisiana, 33% of new HIV cases and 34% of new AIDS cases are among women.
· HIV continues to disproportionately affect African Americans in Louisiana. In 2008, 72% of newly diagnosed HIV cases and 70% of newly diagnosed AIDS cases were among African Americans.
