LaCHIP
What is LaCHIP? Back to Top

LaCHIP is a health insurance program designed to bring quality health care to currently uninsured children and youth up to the age of 19 in Louisiana. Children can qualify for coverage under LaCHIP using higher income standards than traditional Medicaid.

What is LaCHIP Affordable Plan? Back to Top

LaCHIP Affordable Plan is a new LaCHIP health insurance program for uninsured children in moderate income families whose income is too much to qualify for regular LaCHIP but whose gross income is below 250 percent of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL). The regular LaCHIP only covers uninsured children in families with countable income up to 200 percent of the FPL.

What medical services are covered by LaCHIP? Back to Top
LaCHIP provides Medicaid coverage for doctor visits for primary care as well as preventive and emergency care, immunizations, prescription medications, hospitalization, home health care and many other health services. For a more detailed listing of covered services, click
here.
How can I find a doctor who accepts LaCHIP? Back to Top

To get a list of doctors, dentists or other medical service providers in your parish who take Medicaid, please visit our Provider Map page. This page will let you search for Medicaid services in your parish. If there is no doctor listed in your parish, try searching for doctors in your region or in the parishes around yours.

You can also find a listing of primary care physicians (for example, pediatricians,

family doctors, general practice doctors) on the CommunityCARE program Web site. All children enrolled in LaCHIP will be linked to a doctor through this program. Most children in families who qualify for traditional Medicaid are also linked to a primary care doctor through CommunityCARE.  However, those families that have other private insurance coverage in addition to Medicaid are not a part of CommunityCARE, but they can still use this website as a resource for physicians who are enrolled and active in the Medicaid program.

You can also call 1-877-455-9955 toll-free for a listing of specialists (including dentists) in your area who are enrolled and active in the LaCHIP and Medicaid programs.

It is important to remember that not all doctors who are active in the Medicaid program are taking new patients. Be sure to ask the doctor’s office if they are taking new Medicaid patients when you call to schedule an appointment.

Who qualifies for LaCHIP? Back to Top

LaCHIP provides health care coverage for the children of Louisiana's working families with moderate and low incomes. Children must be under age 19 and not covered by health insurance. Family income cannot be more than 200 percent of the federal poverty level (about $3,675 monthly for a family of four) for the regular LaCHIP program.

If your income is more than these amounts, you may still qualify by applying the possible deductions to your total income. You may also qualify with the new LaCHIP Affordable Plan, which is available to uninsured Louisiana children in families up to the age of 19 whose families have an annual income up to 250 percent of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL).  Will these income levels change? Back to Top

How was LaCHIP created? Back to Top

LaCHIP is Louisiana's version of the national Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP), authorized under Title XXI of the Social Security Act.
