JCIH RECOMMENDATIONS FOR EARLY INTERVENTION

1.     All families of infants with any degree of bilateral or unilateral permanent hearing loss  should be eligible for E.I. services

2.     There is a simplified, single point of entry into E.I. specific for children with hearing loss to ensure specialty services

3.     EI providers should be experienced with special skills and expertise in providing families with the highest quality of service for infants and young children with hearing loss

4.     Early intervention programs and systems should include:

  • a family-centered approach
  • culturally responsive practices
  • collaborative professional-family relationships
  • strong family involvement
  • developmentally appropriate practices
  • interdisciplinary assessments
  • community-based provision of services

More information on characteristics of early intervention programs and systems can be found in Joint Committee on Infant Hearing (JCIH) Position Statement (listed under Guidelines).
