This is National Nurses Week, May 6-12, set aside to honor all of America's 3.1 million registered nurses, including the more than 54,000 nurses in Louisiana. National Nurses Week is the time of year designated to recognize and celebrate these professionals and highlight the work they do every day to save lives and help people achieve better heath. </description>

      <title>Louisiana receives federal funding for permanent housing and services to low-income people who have disabilities</title>

      <description>The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) have awarded Louisiana funding for rental assistance to help extremely low-income people who have disabilities find affordable housing in their communities.  This opportunity, provided through HUD, is a result of the Section 811 Project Rental Assistance Demonstration Program (PRA Demo).  PRA Demo assists people with disabilities who earn less than 30 percent of the median income in their parish of residence and require long-term services and supports to live in their community as independently as possible.</description>

      <title>Health Department Announces Response to Mid-Year Budget Reductions</title>

      <description>Today, Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals Secretary Bruce D. Greenstein announced mid-year reductions at the agency that will save $51.8 million in State General Fund for Fiscal Year 2012-2013. These reductions have a total impact of $82.6 million for this Fiscal Year, when federal funds that would be used to match affected programs and services are considered. DHH’s reductions are part of the State’s overall mid-year reduction plan that addresses the budget shortfall in the current fiscal year.</description>

      <description>Louisiana’s efforts to improve the quality of care for aging and elderly citizens took another step forward on August 1, 2008 with the opening of a second location offering PACE services.  PACE, or Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly, offers seniors a variety of services to address medical, social and personal care needs.  The Baton Rouge program is made possible by a three-way partnership between the Department of Health and Hospitals (DHH), Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady Health System, and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

That’s because the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has recently given its approval to the state’s request to add an additional 1,500 Elderly and Disabled Adult Waiver slots, allowing for a total of 4,403 persons to now receive these services.
