The Department of Health (DHH) is reminding community members and residents across Louisiana about resources available for those affected by the tragic shooting at a Lafayette movie theater Thursday night.

"My thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and families of this tragedy," said LDH secretary Kathy Kliebert. "We are working with local officials, law enforcement, non-government and other organizations to make sure the community gets the assistance it needs to help make it through this painful time."

LDH provides resources for anyone affected by the shooting, including the victims, their families and their friends, as well as individuals with mental health concerns.

Community Resources

The time following a tragic event is difficult for all involved and people react in different ways. You may experience a physical or emotional response, including feelings such as anger, guilt or sadness. Take the time to think about and discuss your feelings with family or friends. Seek help from a professional immediately if you have trouble returning to a normal routine, feel helpless, have thoughts about hurting yourself or others, or experience a new urge to use alcohol or drugs. Consider contacting:

  • Acadiana Area Human Services District - 337-262-4190
  • Acadiana Area Human Services District Crisis Line - 1-877-655-8241
  • Office of Behavioral Health Crisis Counseling 24-Hour Hotline - 1-866-310-7977
  • Louisiana Healthcare Connections 24-Hour Hotline - 1-877-941-8079
  • SAMHSA Disaster Distress Helpline - 1-800-985-5990 or text TalkWithUs to 66764

It is important to pay special attention to the needs of children. If a child has questions about the situation, speak with them calmly about their fears. Be honest and provide information in small amounts. Make sure they know there are adults who are there to protect them, and that they can ask if they have any questions.
