The Desire Florida Mental Health Clinic provides comprehensive out-patient services to adults in the lower 9th ward area. Our primary strategy is to make mental health services easily accessible, and available to adults and/or families in an effort to maximize all available resources for optimum care.
Services area provided to individuals who are homicidal, suicidal or gravely disabled and/or have a diagnosis of serious mental illness.
Services available: Diagnostic screening and evaluation, psychiatric evaluation, psychological evaluation, medication management, crisis intervention, individual/group therapy, referral services, etc.
Intake Process: All potential clients are screened to assess admission eligibility for treatment. Consumers are expected to meet certain criteria and guidelines set by DHH/OMH. Consumers must be at least 18 years old and reside in the Desire Florida catchment area.
Vietnamese Clinic: Culturally sensitive mental health clinic services provided to those eligible Vietnamese adults who reside in Orleans, Plaquemines and St. Bernard parishes.
Day Treatment (I.T.M.): Specialized group treatment offered Monday through Friday with the primary purpose of providing a safe and controlled environment where communication skills, daily living skills and coping strategies are developed. Medication education/monitoring and management are done routinely. These comprehensive services provided in an Intensive Treatment Mileau are not only essential in improving the consumers level of function but also is crucial to the reduction/relapse of hospitalization.
Staff: Our staff includes highly trained professionals who are Psychiatrists, Social Workers, Counselors, Nurses, Psychologist and a highly dedicated clerical support staff.

FEES:
Fees are assessed on sliding fee scale, based on the individuals income and number of dependents. Medicare, Medicaid, private insurance and private pay are accepted.
CLINIC HOURS:
Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:40 p.m. Closed on weekends and all official State holiday. After hour emergency services are available through the COPE line at 269-2673 or 269-COPE.
The Desire Florida Mental Health Clinic is uniquely located in the lower 9th ward at 3400 Florida Avenue. It is on the corner of Desire Street and Florida Avenue. There is one small parking lot in the front of the building and another parking lot in the rear of the building both accessible from the street.
From Uptown (South): Take South Claiborne Avenue going North (after crossing Canal Street it becomes North Claiborne) to Desire Street and turn left. There is a traffic light. Continue on Desire Street to Florida Avenue. The clinic will be located on the right.
From Downtown (St. Bernard Parish): Take North Claiborne Avenue to Desire Street and turn right, continue on Desire Street to Florida Avenue.
From the East: Take I-10 West to the Louisa Street exit, follow the exit ramp around the left to Louisa Street and turn left at the light, cross the railroad tracks, continue down Louisa Street to Florida Avenue. (There are more railroad tracks, a drainage canal and a traffic light.) At the light, turn left on to Florida Avenue drive two blocks to Desire Street. The clinic is to your right (gray building) on the corner of Desire and Florida Avenue.
From the West: Take I-10 East to the Louisa/Almonaster South exit. Follow the Louisa exit ramp and turn left on Louisa Street and continue to Florida Avenue (cross railroad tracks and a drainage canal) turn left at traffic light onto Florida Avenue, continue two blocks to Desire Street. The clinic is on the right at the corner of Desire and Florida Avenue.
